WOYWW 639: Catch-up, rusting, bleaching, image transfers, embossing...

I had to skip last week's WOYWW as I was super busy and I wouldn't have been able to visit everyone back. Hope you're all doing well. Where did summer go? Back in June, autumn seemed so distant and here we are in September! My son's starting Sixth Form tomorrow - scary!

Despite being busy with other things, I still found time to create and experiment in the last two weeks. Here's a desk shot from yesterday.

You'll notice the new TH media mat and heat tool, both of which I had been able to resist up until recently before giving in. That's the travel size mat - I hope it will allow me to keep at least that small area clear so I'll always have somewhere to create, even if the clutter overtakes the rest of my desk - that's the idea anyway - and so far it's been working! The heat tool is fantastic too - it's a gamechanger for me. The reason I hadn't got one before was because I already had a heat tool for embossing and I used a hairdryer to dry my layers (both on my head and on paper) but I always had to do those things away from my desk as everthing would get blown off - but not with this little tool! It's so quiet and I can use it sitting at my desk. It dries paint and melts powders much quicker too! Both came from Craft Stash and at much lower prices than I had seen elsewhere, so I'm happy!

I've created a few bits and bobs in the last two week, but mainly I've been experimenting with rusting, bleaching, image transfers and embossing. I'll show you some of my results:

First off is a rusted and bleached piece of fabric - the bleach was stamped on a still wet surface and created this cool pattern - quite an unexpected and unintentional result:

More recently I've tried stamping bleach on my previously eco-dyed papers - it also works with stencils! I got more definition from my stamps on these surfaces:

The image transfer experiments below involved matte laminating sheets. Basically, if you laminate just one side of a laser print or a magazine image, you can remove the paper from the back (rubbing with water) and the image stays on the film with a semi-transparent background. And it works with inkjet prints too, if you print them on photo paper - this way you don't even need to rub off the paper, it just peels away. I'm sure it works with gloss lamination as well, but I prefer the silky feel of the matte finish. Here's a little visual summary of my results (with image credits to maremismallart and medievalmirage):

And finally, though not in this order, I've tried an embossing technique that involves stamping into melted embossing powders to create this metal effect (I also added some gilding wax to highlight the textures):

You can see some of these used in the projects below:

There were a few other things I've made, but I'll post those next time! Happy #639! xx

  1. Some really cool techniques there Zsuzsa. I have the left handed version of the travel mat (and case) also from Craft Stash. I have the TH heat tool too but tend to use it more for drying than heat embossing. Hope the first day at 6th form goes well. Meow to Oreo too. Stay safe and Happy WOYWW. Sarah #14

  2. You always have such different and interesting techniques to share, it’s wonderful! My favourite is the embossing, that has an amazing effect which you use so well in the project, I bet you’ll use that one an awful lot. Love the faded bleached fabric and paper too, it looks ancient painted wall plaster or stucco!

PS Can’t believe your son is starting 6th form, blimey that’s gone quick. Hope he has fun.

  6. You are the Queen of Experimenting. I love how you just go for it and the results you get are always brilliant.
Love your metal effects with the ep. I used to do a lot of that but lately I've got stuck with journaling and nothing else much - about time i started to branch out again. I need a bit of your oomph to get me started.
    Fabulous stuff as always Zsuzsa.

  7. Wow your desk is busy can see why you have to move when using the 'hair dryer'. Your new tool reminds me of my travel hair dryer I have same size and probably not as powerful as a normal dryer. Love your techniques on the melted powders. Ani

  8. Lots of great projects today. I Never throw anything away if I like it, they were all free stamps that I got rid of. What did you do your embossing on? Have a great week Angela #10

  9. Your projects are all juicy goooorrrgeous this week, Zsuzsa! Really inspiring. I haven't done any more laminating yet, but dying to try that, now I've got some matte folders. I did some stamping into UTEE many years ago and love the stamped metal look. My experiments with bleach and teabags last year was less than successful - it's really something I want to master as I love the effect. Perhaps I'll have another go at it sometime. So glad you've got a media mat and heat tool! I've got the big media mat (pressie from my hubby a couple of years ago) and I absolutely love it - wonder how I managed before I had it. I've got the same heat tool in white. I also have my original embossing one. A lot of people think you only need one heat tool but they do serve different purposes and well worth the investment.

  10. I can't believe it's September either, did we have summer? Love all your experiments and projects this week. Thanks for your visit - and yes just 2 days before Diana; not that I would ever forget but with all the OTT coverage of that anniversary, there was no way I would forget... in the early years it used to drive me mad; like she was the only person to have passed away.... but i've mellowed in my old age!! Have a good week and hope your son enjoys his first day at 6th form. Helen #3

  11. Thanks for your return visit, Zsuzsa - I agree with you, I like the purple DVDs too, and I do plan on using larger pieces of some of the more interesting ones for other purposes. Some of them have gorgeous swirly patterns on them. I think the pre-cut mosaic squares would be a lot easier than the broken china but I'm going to try with the DVD ones first. I'm hoping to have some photos for next week if I have time and energy to get on with it. I think mosaic is a fascinating medium. We've seen some fabulous ancient Roman ones in Israel, and also here in the UK. They were a real status symbol. LLJ suggested a darker grout might have made my spiral design stand out more, and I took her up on her advice and I've done the first layer of some black acrylic and it's already looking better! I'll put up some photos next week.

I totally agree about kitties - doing their job of being adorable! Just stroking and cuddling them causes a great surge of feel-good endorphins, doesn't it! Best therapy ever. They say that people who have cats have fewer heart attacks. The other thing they are really good at is keeping us highly amused on a daily basis! Full marks to Oreo for doing what he does so well! When you said this it brought to mind the poem by the 18th century English poet Christopher Smart: "For I will consider my cat Jeoffrey..." from "Jubilate Agno" - "Rejoice in the Lamb," set to music by Benjamin Britten. We sang this in the choir I used to belong to. It's an extraordinary poem written by a man committed to an assylum for religious mania! Basically he says that his cat Jeoffrey glorifies God simply by being a cat, and doing it well. It's well observed. https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/45173/jubilate-agno

  12. I actually think the experimenting and playing with the techniques is more fun than making stuff. I seem to get further when I don't think about the end product which is why I like making Masterboards with no plan of how I will use them whereas if I need to make a card my brain just goes to sleep and I can't think what to do. Wishing you a lovely and creative woyww, Angela x6x

  13. Some great techniques Zsuzsa, Please take care to have good ventilation when using bleach. I burnt my lungs breathing in ammonia in silversmithing class.
    You got lovely effects though.
Take care and have a good week

    1. I didn't use much at all! I'm sure I breathe in more cleaning the toilets LOL, but I'll be careful! I didn't realise you could burn your lungs!

  15. I love your experiments and techniques - the bleach effect looks fabulous on the eco print and I love the tags - they are gorgeous. The embossing has come out beautifully and the gilding wax gives them a wonderful finish. I've never heard of transfers with laminate pouches - definitely something to look in to. As always it's an absolute delight to see what you are up to and be inspired by your amazing experiments.
Happy WOYWW, hope your son has a good time at 6th form.

  16. lOVING YOUR POST THIS WEEK, MAINLY BECAUSE I HAVE FOUND , WELL, HUBBY HAS, a way into the Stamping ground. I missed everyone sooo much. I know what you mean, TH 's stuff is brilliant but expensive and do we really need it!? YES! I've just added two more inks, as they were both cheaper than usual. Love all your paint spasing, make me hungry to clear away a space and get stuck in! Happy WOYWW ! ((Lyn)) #22

  17. I love all your experimenting! It always works as a perfect springboard for me off on other tangents. The bleach is something I played wit a little, then used for, well cleaning, and need to get more before I have another play. I love those final tags. Just the right amount of grunge LOL!

  18. Good grief, you HAVE been busy, and as always, your creations are so inspiring. I love your experimental nature, and those bleached items look to interesting...I can see something of that sort in my future if I can get out of the books! :D Thanks again for stopping by to say hello, and for the ideas you so generously pass along!

  19. I'm loving your bleaching, that looks really awesome. I'm also intrigued by the image transfers using a laminator, I must try that when I get more organised upstairs. I've done quite a bit of stamping into melted EP, that's a lot of fun and reminds of me using wax seals. I made some pirate coins one time using that technique to make them look like old coins. 20. I am in oooh and aweee over your bleached fabric, I want a skirt like that!! I might go find me some fabric... it's tempting to try this out myself. I bought my own heat tool years ago (I think it was in 2007 or so...) and although it blows 'harder' than the ones you can buy now (so I was told...) I couldn't do without it. Enjoy your weekend, I hope the weather is as nice and sunny as it is here at the moment (finally!) Hug from Holland, Marit #4

  21. I had to stop by when I realized you were rusting and bleaching. How wonderful. I've done it on fabric, but not on paper. This turned out great.

I've never used a laminator to transfer an image. I have, however, used clear contact paper to transfer an image. I guess I'm most surprised by the melted EP. I am curious how you created them in those shapes (rectangles, etc). Did you have a mold?

Obviously not playing in WOYWW, just stopped by to check out your always creative "play."

  22. Hi Zsuzsa, just popped over to thank you for the lovely comment about my canvas. It was fun to make though I seem to spend far too much time moulding the dragons, just love them xXx

  23. Hi Zsusza, Yes, times is flying, and everyone seems so busy (me too, I have not blogged for a month!) I love your experiments, especially the stamping into the melted embossing powder. Good luck to your son to the new school year. It is the last one before university, am I right?
