WOYWW #643: Rust, bling and a flip-through

So I fell off the bandwagon, but I'm back! It's been pretty busy around here but things have now settled. I impulsively decided to shoot that flip-through last night that I wanted  to do three weeks ago. I normally use my little camera but it's difficult to position so I got this rig to use with my phone.  (that's a half-eaten pot of yoghurt on the left, in case you're wondering...a little mid-night snack)

The video is still uploading, so I will share it later, hopefully at the end of this post. Until then here's some other stuff I've been working on. First up: rusting! All you need is vinegar and some metal bits - no problem if they're not rusty yet - they will rust very quickly in some vinegar! Here's my rusting tray:

and some rusted fabric and paper:

It's been birthday season as well. My son has turned 17 and Oreo 6!!! How did that happen? It means next year my son will be an adult and Oreo a senior cat! Next up, my hub's birthday this weekend - all three birthdays bunched up within two weeks of each other - mine being the outlier in March.

Here's a card I made for my son - I bought it back when I got hooked on diamond painting - a bit of bling never hurt anyone and he likes owls. I thought the three books could represent his three sixth form  subjects.

And of course, I personalised the inside with some scrapbooky stuff and cat cartoons as has become our tradition over the years. The whole of the back is covered in cat cartoons as well. You can find a bunch of these cartoons by Scott Metzger here. They always brighten up my day!

Now let's see if my video has uploaded.... Here it is, my little glue book containing trial pieces, fails, left-overs, tags, all sorts of things that I just glued into a handmade journal:

Happy #643

  1. I'm shocked but not at old your son is but how old Oreo is, I'm sure I remember him as a kitten! Loving the video and can't wait to see what you do with the fabric. Have a lovely creative woyww, Angela x14x

  2. They do insist on growing up these boys of ours! Great card, I loved the one you made me for last Christmas too. The rusting looks interesting, you’re bound to create something interesting from those items! I loved the flip through of the journal too, you’re just too talented for words!

  4. I've just downloaded the stuff I need to make that 100% Natural Card - not sure whether it was an ad after your video or something you have made?
Oh I did enjoy that Glue Book of yours. Loved the music too. Just a nice pace and so peaceful to listen to as I browsed your delightful book. I so admire the way you do your journals. Was this a book that you had removed the middle from? I am supposing it is called a Glue book because all the different elements are glued in?
Cannot get over the fact that that little boy is now a grown up in waiting. Gosh, time does go so fast and Oreo is growing up with him and becoming a senior cat. Lovely card and lovely thought behind the three books shown on the cover.
What a talented mum you are.

  7. Love the owl card and your glue book. You do like your butterflies. I have several sheets of Hunkydory butterflies both gold and silver, do you think they would look good dipped in vinegar? Perhaps I will try one. Have a great week Angela #7

  8. I can't believe your son is 16 and Oreo is 6! I can't believe our two girles are now 4, either... I love the card you made for him (I always love those cat cartoons too - so well observed). I've never seen this diamond painting in the flesh and don't really know what it is but the owl is stunning. Your little glue book is a gem - so nice to see how the cloned book cover works on it, too. I watched the video twice, and the second time round, was able to appreciate how good it looked against the co-ordinating background! You said the book had some "fails" in it, but I couldn't spot anything that wasn't a complete success!

Thank you so much for your 3 lovely comments, and for your good wishes re my treatment. Yes, we all hope cancer won't stop at our door - we all know so many people who have had it, but until you get it you have a feeling of invulnerability. I never thought I'd get it in a million years, let alone twice!! I'm still itchy and sore but it will pass eventually. I'm just glad it's not nearly as bad as I was expecting. I agree about demystifying it with lots of information. I think a lot of people are quite understandably very frightened by the whole thing (I probably would have been, without my faith), and then to be confronted with all this monster technology might be enough to tip one over the edge! I have always found that having a wacky sense of humour and the ability to make weird connections between things takes the sting out of a lot in life. I'm glad I was so well primed over the years with Star Trek and Stargate watching! All the medical tech stuff looks so familiar and non-threatening after that!

My hubby's friend's wife went to the breast unit today to hear the result of her biopsy and it isn't cancer! I am so pleased for them both, having just gone through what she experienced, and I'm glad her outcome was so different. They were so worried, and it's nice to hear some good news when there's so much doom and gloom about. I can so identify with their relief!

I am so glad you liked the embossed photo paper technique - I fell in love with it when I first saw that video. I've had to improvise a bit because I didn't have all the materials she had. I very much look forward to seeing your efforts in that direction, too. I've found another, very different one using Distress Oxides on photo paper and I'm keen to try that too - really vibrant colours! Not enough hours in the day to do all that I want to do...

Glad you appreciate my organising!! I was able to benefit from it this afternoon when I made a relatively quick card (for me! - they usually take me a week!) - picking out the baggies and choosing what to put on it was fun. Photos next week. I'm keen to get my lattices cut, too.

It hadn't occurred to me that Lily looked grumpy in the photo till you pointed it out - it's because she's got her ears back a bit. She was quite happy - just sitting there thinking kitty thoughts and enjoying being near my hubby. She does get grumpy sometimes - with Ruby! Ruby teases her and chases her and wants to play, and Lily hisses at her and I tell her to put her pocket money in the swear box! Most of the time they get on really well together, though, and they do love each other.

    Happy WOYWW,

  9. I love the flip through and cool rusty bits. I have just made a couple of tiny journals for friends birthdays. It's been a year since I made a book! Hopefully it's a new trend. Wishing you a happy October xo

  10. Glue book doesn’t really do it justice as a name, I think as collections go, your random stuff is more arty than my proper finished stuff! happy birthdays to your lovely son and Oreo, I was shocked by the number 17, how did that happen!! And of course, happy returns to your lovely husband. Your post today goes from rust to diamonds and yet it is all treasure. Better warn your boys not to leave seemingly random bits of metal around for a while!

  12. Thanks for the video! I've been meaning to mention to you that there are loads of lovely free-to use and download book covers available at places like The Library of Congress and the NYPL. You might like this link https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/the-art-of-book-covers-1820-1914 but the actual sites will have more. Maybe fodder for future journal and book covers?

    Happy WOYWW, late again

  13. Hi Zsuzsa, I am glad to read that everything is okay for you and your family. Your rusted paper and fabric are gorgeous!
So many birthdays in such a short time... Time is flying, I remember Oreo as a young cat... Your son have lucky to get such a personalised card every year, it is so much love in it!

  14. Your son is 17 already????!!! However did that happen so quickly; ditto with Oreo's senior years as well. Good grief.

The card you created for Mike is wonderful; I'll bet he treasures every one of them.

Loving the rusted paper/fabric...that's going to come into play in some more journalling, I suspect. And your journal video is delightful - gorgeous work!

Happy week, my friend, and stay safe...xo

  15. I can't believe your son is 17 (although if I thought about I would know!). The card is brilliant and love the rusting effects you are getting on the papers. The journal is gorgeous as usual. Take care and stay safe. With love & God Bless, Caro xxx (#16)

  16. Oh gosh so late this week (eeek last week) don't think I've had the PC on since Wednesday's link up.

Loving your son's card, scary when they become adults, make the most of this next year - LOL. Sorry about the hand photo, but your response was much like mine when the dressing came off prematurely and I had to sort it out. Yes a "The Works" foiled jigsaw, loved doing it. Took about an hour to take it apart mainly left handed!!! Oh my life!!

Hand and wrist still sore seeing the consultant this evening for my dressing off proper, hoping it's all OK, although still not using it much.

    We'll see. BJ#10

  17. I think your Glue Book is great and should as least be called The Great Glue Book! The owl is amazing and must've taken ages! This is a VERY late cach up on WOYWW.... I think I was away! Happy Late WOYWW!?
