WOYWW #625: ATCs and an old book

It was so much fun receiving all the WOYWW anniversary ATCs in the post - we know why it's called Happy Mail, right? I haven't actually done much in the past week and I even forgot to take a photo of my desk, so instead I'll show you my floor where I laid out all the ATCs received. I feel so spoiled, especially by Caro, who's sent me not one but two ATCs (as I was also her PIF) along with a load of goodies as shown in the bottom row. I love each and every one of your creations - they're all unique and they will join all the others from previous years' swaps - I'll just need to get them organised.

These were the ones I sent out below, along with a postcard I had printed from my own photo (I used Moo.com - they're really good!). It shows the Almonry Museum in Evesham - I took that photo in 2017 when we first visited not realising, that we will end up living here. Four years on and we couldn't be happier!

I could finish here and call it 'short & sweet' but I'm dying to show you this old book I bought on Ebay. I was going to use it as an art journal but it's really too precious for that - I can't possibly deface it! It was published in 1866 and belonged to someone called Annie Mahone. I wonder who she was and what her life was like back then a 150 years ago! I feel so privileged to own this old book - I might get into the habit of collecting them. Here are a few photos - there are some illustrations inside as well, which I might scan and share later, as they would be copyright free by now, I assume.

Again, I could finish here and call it 'not-so-short-and-sweet' but I still have a few photos of some blooms to delight you with. First, my 3-year-old rhododendron bush, which had two flower buds this year - twice as many as last year! - and loads of new leaf shoots. And then my little garden centre haul, that I bought to console myself after being bitterly disappointed with my online purchase from Gardening Express. Do not buy any plants online - it's  a big scam - they use stock photos to lure you in but that's not what you're getting! I won't ruin my blog by showing you what they sent - lesson learned!

And that's it! Not at all short but hopefully still a bit sweet! I'll see you around!

Happy #625!

  1. Hello Zsuzsa ... aren't all the ATC's just wonderful? I love how they are all so varied and unique and a total reflection of what each individual maker's style of art is. True little treasures for sure. Thank you everso much for your ATC & gorgeous postcard ... what a beautiful building. Oh I couldn't alter that book either - certainly one to just keep and wonder about and leaf through from time to time. I have heard similar horror stories to yours about buying plants on-line - how naughty they are! Take care, love to you from Debbie 21 xXx

  2. I really loved the postcard, such a gorgeous building and how lovely that you ended up living near there! And your Atc and envelope were sooooooo beautiful, I loved receiving it and getting soo the happy Mail too. You garden is gorgeous, look at that rhododendron, the colours are amazing! I must admit I’ve only bought plants online once, never again. I much rather seeing them in real life, bit like fabric really!

  3. It’s been such a lovely week of happy mail and it’s been a good excuse for catch ups with Jo to do the swapping and sharing. Thanks so much for yours. Your block is really lovely as are the gorgeous flowers from your garden. We bought plants on line and almost half were dead on arrival....the company gave us a full refund and I managed to keep a few alive too (hoping these will bloom later in the year).

  4. Your ATCs are beautiful and so are the ones you received. I loved that you actually photographed the picture in the postcard. How wonderful. I can't tell, but it looks like that might be a first edition. If it is, it is definitely worth some money and should not be used for journaling or altering in any way. Lovely plants from the plant shop. I never buy anything online. I am afraid of being hacked. And now you are afraid of getting bad plants (grin). Happy WOYWW from # 3.

  5. Great collection of ATCs and thank you so much for the lovely one you sent me. Your comment about visiting Almonry Museum not knowing that one day you would live there. Years ago we used to go to the East Coast and drive round the edge of Lincoln where we could just see the Cathedral and I always said one day we must visit Lincoln, we never got round to it until we both got jobs in the county and I love it, so pleased we came here. Hope your week is a happy one full of woyww creative time. Hugs, Angela x19x

  6. Hullo Zsuzsa thanks for popping Uber love your flowers sorry you were scammed online, I’ve bought online but was genuine, guess it happens sadly, I’d prefer to buy as it like you’ve done, that book is a beauty if some that old bough at op shops for not much must confess but have read them and treasure them and no not for cutting.
But good idea to scan! Love the ATCs too.
Thanks for Sharing, God bless and keep you safe, and all those you love, hugs Shaz in Oz.x

  9. Happy WOYWW Zsuzsa. Your book is fabulous. I collect old books, not in a big way, in fact I like small ones :) copyright is usually about 70 years, or 20 years after the death of the author. Of course with the likes of Beatrix Potter, copyright has been extended. Copyright is different in the US and they can use stuff we can’t- too much information? 🤣. I am very glad you liked the ATC pocket/folder. There are several versions about, mine is quite simple and you can probably work it out just by looking at it, but I am planning a tutorial on my blog this week. Beautiful flowers. Angela #12

  10. That book is utterly fantastic - I can understand you not wanting to deface it - I wonder who she was? Have you tried to look her up? I had a quick look and there are several in America, she may have had relatives over there she was named after. Sorry, I should not be so nosey.
Thanks for telling me that was the Almonry Museum - now I will look it up and read about it - looks a lovely place to visit. (stop me nosing Annie LOL)
Your flowers are lovely. I had three gorgeous rhododendron bushes but lost two early on and the last one went two years ago - they were beautiful! Wish I could find the photos of them to show you. The flowers were white with a burgundy throat - they looked like orchids. I must look out for another one and this time keep it in a pot and bring it in so the frost cannot hurt it.
Glad you are happy in your new(ish) home.
    Hugs, Neet 1 xx

  11. A great collection of ATCs, Zsuzsa. Is it really FOUR years since you moved house? I can hardly believe it - it feels like last year! Time certainly is racing by. The old book is fabulous. It reminds me of the beautiful Bible Mum gave me for my confirmation many years ago - it belonged to my grandfather and is dated 1877. It looks like new! I'll have to remember to post some photos of it. Your garden flowers are so beautiful! Unfortunately our Clematis montana is going over now - it's been a fabulous show this year but it doesn't last long.

Thank you for your lovely comment. So glad you liked seeing the kitty throw in situ with my hubby completing the picture - the kitties love it too! It's a huge relief to be able to work on something that I don't have to keep secret now. Interesting about kitties making themselves scarce at school chucking out time. I don't blame them... Funnily enough, we were only wondering yesterday what happened to Lily and Ruby's little siblings. I can't imagine they are more spoilt than our two - that would be hard to achieve! Of course, they take us completely for granted and haven't a clue, when we remind them that the majority of the world's kitties have to catch their own food, and sleep under cars. Thank you for your good wishes for my biopsy - I was very reassured by what he said, and even more so by his taking the extra step of doing the biopsy just to make sure. I really don't think there will be anything to worry about.

  12. All the ATCs look fab spread out like that. Lovely! And that book really is something special. Really, I love a long WOYWW post - there is always so much to share, once a week sometimes feels like to little LOL! Our peony is out and looks amazing. Yours are gorgeous too, sham about the old bait&switch the garden place pulled! They should be ashamed.

    Happy WOYWW

  16. Lovely collection of ATCs....will be interested to know how you’re storing them, Mary Anne has them all on show but I can’t manage that, certainly not at the mo! I loved your postcard, was rather hoping it was your house, but figured that you’d have told us a bit about it by now! Those four years have flown by, so glad it turned out to be such a good move for you. Beautiful clematis, what a colour! We ordered our roses from an online grower and they’ve been fine, now about five years old, but I have to admit that I haven’t bothered ordering other stuff online and that’s for reasons of laziness really. When they come, you have to rush around and see to them and pot them on or get them in and it takes me a while to be in the mood for gardening. Although I love my garden to look tidy and pretty, I’m still not sold on the gardening as a creative therapy idea!

  17. Oh aren't all those ATCs just lovely? What a talented bunch! The book is really yummy too, I can see how you'd not want to use it. I have to say I have had pretty good results with plants on line - and the two roses I bought last year knock spots off anything I've ever bought from a garden centre. So personally it's a tool, but I'm not going to travel to a nursery in yorkshire to buy something I want if I can order it on line. But yes the more 'mail order' catalogue type companies - they are showing what the plant will look like in an ideal world after lots of time and tlc!!Thanks for your visit. Have a good week, stay well, stay safe, love n hugs Cindyxx #23

  18. Thank you again for the gorgeous ATC and postcard Zsuzsa. I can see why you can't bear to use the book for art journaling - it is magnificent. You have received some lovely items too! Meow to Oreo. Stay safe and happy WOYWW. Sarah #2

  20. Thank you so much for your gorgeous ATC! And the envelope too of course. It has been a delight to receive them all and see all the others on the desks. What a fabulous book!? I bet you could easily research that name and show it to her ancestors. We've been having a little delve into our family history to solve a mystery and I would have loved to have seen handwriting from one of my great (great great?) grandmother's and read the words that she read. Fascinating! Stay safe and keep smiling, Lisa-Jane #8

  21. Hi Zsuzsa, lovely assortment of ATCs. Thank you so much for mine. I have made one for you, but unfortunately, I can't get to the post office until Fridays, so will post it tomorrow. I agree the book is too gorgeous to use. I have our old family bible (not as old as your book, but similar style) - it was bought for my parents as a wedding present over 60 years ago. The illustrations are gorgeous. Once the builders have been and relaid our patios I'm looking forward to getting a few new plants, including clematis. I just want a few really nice smelling ones lol. Tnanks for stopping by my blog. My granddaughter is 5, so not sure she will be the youngest WOYWWEr! Have a lovely week, Heather xx #17

  23. Love your ATCs! Also love your old book, I have a few that I would never deface either, too precious. Ordering plants online can be a bit hit and miss, I have used Crocus before and been happy with their service, though they can be a bit pricey Happy WOYWW! Elle #35 this week
