WOYWW #636: Plaster of Paris, tags, scrap journal and another old book

I almost didn't link up today, but here I am - totally addicted to WOYWW! I'll be quick because I plan to walk into town and check out some of the charity shops looking for old books either to alter or to add to my growing collection. Here's my desk earlier in the week when I was working on some tags.

The Slimfast container holds Plaster of Paris - I must remember that LOL! Also, an empty cat food tin - Sheba's Prime Cuts, very fancy stuff - Tesco sent it as a substitute for Oreo's already fancy treat that was out of stock - and now that he knows about it, I'll have to keep buying it - 90p a pop! Oreo loves it - he literally licks the bowl clean! This stuff is so fancy, I wouldn't mind putting it in my own sandwiches! The cat eats better than we do! At least the empty pot serves well for mixing the P of P.

This is what I made with the plaster, following a tutorial by Jane Chipp on the Graphics Fairy premium site. I subscribed for a month, downloaded what I needed and cancelled it - but I will resub at a later date, I'm sure. The tutorial shows you how to coat a cardboard box with plaster - mine's matchbox sized.

And here's a closer look at the tags shown in my desk shot - just playing with oxides and my new TH  stamps  - they're so versatile!

I incorporated some of these tags in my new journal, which I will just refer to as my "scrap" journal. It contains leftovers from other projects, trial pieces, fails, clean-up sheets - you name it - I just slap them in there! I very quickly made these first four spreads (last night I finished another five, but I will keep those for next week). These are literally 5-minute exercises and so enjoyable - just sticking and stamping! None of that faffing around I normally do!

And last but not least, I snagged this lovely old book on Ebay. It was a bit more expensive than I would  normally allow myself to pay, but £20 is still very good value for an antique Victorian book in such good condition. I'll try to digitalise this as well and make it available as a download soon.

I'm off now, I'll be late visiting but will get back to everyone who leaves a comment - promise! xx

Happy #636!

  1. I think you’re single handedly keeping the UK old book sales going! I’m just pleased that you’re rescuing them and putting them to such good use. That plaster covered box is great, especially with the little bird inside, so clever. Your work continues to be inspiring, the colours you use are fabulous!

  2. Always love seeing the variety of different projects on your desk Zsuzsa. I see Oreo has you as well trained as every other cat does his/her humans lol. Love the tags and the scrap journal is a great idea. Stay safe, happy WOYWW. Sarah #5

  3. My you have been busy this week. I love your plaster of Paris cover box. I bought Plaster of Paris for my husband who was making a model train layout a few years ago, maybe this would be a good way of using it. Have a great week Angela #9

  6. That book cover is gorgeous, what a great design. It makes me very sad to see people throwing old books away especially when they are as beautiful as this one. Hope you enjoyed your walk into town and wishing you a very happy woyww. Hugs, Angela x14x

  7. Part 1 - too much to say for 1 comment apparently!!
Your art impresses week by week and blows me away increasingly as time goes by. Looking back at your early work makes an interesting comparison and you must be very proud of how you have developed such a fabulous style. (I think that's one reason why blogging is so useful - it's a real encourager, especially in times of creative doubt!) I love your displays, especially with your signature colour so much in evidence. The tags are simply gorgeous, especially all together. I love the idea of making an album to keep all your bits and pieces and samples in - mine are all loose in a box, out of place in my drawing area, and when I was sorting the studio recently I pulled that box down and hummed and ha'ed over it for a while, not knowing where to put it, and put it back again! Perhaps I should follow your example and make a book.

Another simply beautiful old book. This is an interesting thing to collect - not for the content, but for the beauty of the covers! I've got one or two, but for the content, and they aren't in the studio.

I think plaster of Paris would make a very good substitute for Slim Fast, and much cheaper too. Eat a dose of that each day and you'd be full up with calorie-free non-nourishment and would have no appetite for food. Result: weight loss. Worth a try? Well, perhaps not! It could be a bit binding.

Lol at Oreo being spoilt with expensive treats! My hubby and I are convinced that they put a drug in Whiskers so that they won't eat anything else once they've tasted it. Our two eat bog standard Felix and love it - I'm surprised there's any surface left on the dishes as they always lick them completely clean!

Thank you for your visit. Yes, you may have been AWOL when my Zentangle piece was published. I'm thinking of starting a new page on my blog called "Archive Revive" where I transfer significant posts from my old blog - this time WITH photos (darned Blogger, obliterating 8 years' worth of photos at a single stroke - this is why I moved over to Wordpress). Sometimes I refer back to ancient stuff and people have never seen it before. I do grieve over my old blog sometiimes because there are some treasures on there (to me at least) and the photos are gone and it's not read. It might be a good way to preserve these precious posts.

Late last night I bit the bullet and bought a cheapie laminator off Amazon (17 quid's worth) and it arrived today - it's neat and small, and I think it will do what I want, with no bells or whistles. I went all round the houses, vacillating between el cheapo and fancy pants ones with paper trimmers and what not, until I decided I'd already got paper trimmers so why did I need another one? - and came back to the original one I'd seen on Amazon! I shan't be using it for foiling probably, because I've got Cindy's ToDo machine for that now, but there's so much else you can do. If you are looking for inspiration, I've been binge-watching a delightful Geordie girl (could listen to her fabulous accent all day lol! (She says "FyessBuke" if you can translate that!). She's got a whole lot of fabulous videos on imaginative uses of the laminator. Ann Melvin Positively Papercraft https://www.youtube.com/c/PositivelyPapercraft. She has lots of great videos on different ways of using ordinary stash as well. She's really inspirational.

DanoSongs - yes, brilliant. He's got a lot of different genres to choose from, and so generous to share them free of charge like that.

Shoshi x - to be continued!

  9. Hi Zsuzsa, thanks for your return visit. Funnily enough, I have just watched that matte laminator folder/mock vellum video myself! All I've done so far is unpack the laminator and put it in my studio - not even sure where it's going to end up yet. Too much going on at home atm to deal with creative stuff - my hubby's poorly.

  10. My word, that book is quite beautiful. I bet half the pleasure of the collecting is having the choices to look through! a your idea of five minutes of sticking and stamping is great and beautifully productive. Made me smile when you talked about the versatility of the TH stamps…I looked at them not long ago and wondered what on earth I might do with them!!! Don’t you just love how differently we all do our thing.

  11. Wow, that old book is beautiful! I guess many elderly people would be glad to give such books away if they knew you... Your tags are splendid!

  12. I'm in ooh and aah over the book you purchased, fabulous! I got rid of a bunch of old books and kept only a few - a girl can have TOO MUCH old books to alter *grin* The scrap journal is tempting... shall I... but then again, I have so much plans and so little time, can't do it all. Today is sunny and bright overhere in the Netherlands and I hope your day/week is the same! Thanks for stopping by my blog yesterday, it was good to 'see' you! Hug from Holland! Marit #7

  15. So glad you're having fun with your laminator, Zsuzsa! Mine is sitting on the desk where I dumped it. There's too much going on at the moment Chez Shosh and I can't focus on being creative for now so it will be a while before I get my laminator going I'm afraid. Thanks for your good wishes for my hubby - we should know more later today.

  18. That book is simply stunning but it is hard to imagine what is inside could nbe lovelier than your journal. Darn that Tim - he will keep coming up with must-have stamps every time. He'll be the death of me yet. Love the blue bird - so sweet and the p of p housing is fab. Does the GF premium site load faster than the usual one? I find it a bit frustrating to plow thru but they do have such lovely resources. Always a joy to visit your blog, even if it's a late visit.

    Happy so very late WOYWW.

  19. Ohmygoodness, there is some fabulous craftness going on here in your crafty space! Love it all! Just reading through other comments and I supscribe to Ann melvin too, and like Sam Calcott, has been on the telly with Create and Crafe showing us all what fab things we cam make! Crafty people are all zooming off to do YouTube vids. I must admit to adding my Gnome house tree too, but that was just a practice! Some of the real mixed media vids are amazing! Had trouble connecting to Julia's blog this week so, Happy very late woyww, Stay Safe! Keep Crfting! ((Lyn)) #26
