WOYWW #583: Random projects

Hello again everyone! It's unusual for me these days to post two weeks in a row but technically I'm on holiday this week, so I have a bit more time on my hands. First off, a rant: I don't think I like this new format Blogger, do you? What was wrong with the old one? It's so unintuitive - took me a while to figure out how to add photos (and I regard myself as reasonably tech savvy) - it would have been a good idea if the editor didn't default to the HTML view! Argh! Anyways, I seem to be back on track after my initial panic of looking for the upload button and not finding it.

Today I'm sharing some random projects that were totally not planned. I couldn't sleep in that heat last week, so I got up in the middle of the night at around 1 am and started playing randomly. I was up again early the next day and continued - the photo of my desk was taken that morning. Still very messy busy!

Below are my completed random projects - I only used things I found lying around on my desk (gelli prints, scraps from previous projects, postage stamps, washi tapes etc) - this seems to be my go-to method and the reason I need to keep my desk busy at all times, so I have plenty of things within arms reach to play with.

These poppy heads are stuck on wooden bricks with washi tape. The bricks were decorated with gelli prints first: I just stuck them on with gel medium, sanded the edges and inked them and then painted the sides black. I will definitely make more of these as you can stack them on each other like building blocks, as you can see on my shelf.

In other news, we went cycling last weekend and I fell off my bike into stingy nettles - no harm done other than some minor bruises and stingy nettle burns - at least I can tick off the "silly accident for this year" on my to-do list. (If you remember at around the same time last year I fell down the stairs at work, so it seems to be an annual occurrence). My son told me he thought if anyone was going to fall off their bike, it was going to be me, given that I'm the one always dishing out safety advice LOL. What can I say, I was just demonstrating what not to do.

Look at these petunias in my hanging basket. When I bought them a few weeks ago they looked sad and neglected with just a few flowers, badly in need of watering but they recovered nicely.

Thanks for visiting today! Let me know you've been around to make sure I visit you back!

Happy WOYWW

  1. Ouch Zsuzsa, I feel your pain from the nettle stings (I still remember falling into a patch of nettles when 11 or 12 and had one large raised area on each leg from ankle to mid thigh). Absolutely stunning projects from you again this week. I am in awe! Stay safe and happy WOYWW. Sarah #4

  2. Well I enjoyed your random makes very much. It’s lovely to see what people have created. We need happy pics at the moment don’t we. Your hanging basket is lovely too. We had one just the same a few years ago and it lasted all summer.
Take care, mind what you’re doing on that bike haha.

  3. Hi Szuzsa, you have some great projects on show today. It's cooler this morning thank goodness so we might get something done, I am not a lover of the really warm weather and it sounds as though you are the same. I am going to have to have another go with the new Blogger as I'm still using the old one. I've been on the forum and we're not the only ones that don't like it. They say if enough people complain about their issues they will know what needs improving but some people are saying that they would sooner pay for the old interface than go to the new one. Have a lovely woyww, Angela x10x

  5. Oh, bad luck about the bike incident, that sounds painful! Especially as your son will remind you about that for years to come, my two would, for sure! Love your work as usual, so pretty. I've been using the new Blogger for a while now and am used to it, the only thing that annoys me is how uploading photos takes longer...but, first world problems, eh?

  9. What a lovely desk you have. I love those poppy head bricks. I've got some poppy heads just like those, might have to have a play with them.
Ouch, falling off your bike is a trick I'm good at, it's so embarrassing isn't it, more so than hurting yourself. I'm glad no serious damage was done.
Enjoy your week and stay safe

  10. Ooh, I like your collage pieces but have to say the wooden blocks take centre stage with me. They are stunning! I especially like the ones with the poppy heads stuck on, how fabulous are those and how good do they look in your craft room. Of course a lot of it is down to your fabulous Gelli printlng, you are so good at this technique.
Everything on display looks wonderful and I do like your winged horse picture.
Sorry about the nettles, hope there were lots of dock leaves handy to help take the sting down a peg or two.
    Hugs, Neet 14 xx

  11. Oh those petunias are so grateful for their rescue they’re putting on a lovely show! Wow, how cheerful! So sorry about the stingy nettles...argh, nothing worse until you can treat the stings! I cant help but take them personally, I’m always so careful to avoid them!! Love the art bricks, the poppy heads look amazing. I’m sorry you couldn’t seleep in the het, not a problem fro me. The problem for me is on the rare occasion that I cant sleep, I’m incapable of producing such stunning art stuff, for sure!

  18. Your random projects are all juicy-gorgeous, Zsuzsa, and I love your bricks with the poppies and butterflies! So lovely to see them grouped together on the shelf with the dominance of your favourite colour scheme bringing them all together so beautifully. What talent... Sorry to hear that the nettles took their revenge on you for falling onto them and squashing them!! Very unpleasant for both you and the nettles, I should think.

Thank you for visiting - so glad you like the tiny carpets. The black part is the least interesting, just filling in! I love following the pattern and seeing it grow. I never think of this sort of thing as demanding patience, because I just do it, with my feet up on the recliner, anchored in place by two extremely warm and heavy stripy silver tabby bodies, watching TV or chatting with my hubby. There is a lovely relaxing rhythm to the cross stitch, and knitting as well, for that matter, which is very therapeutic and enjoyable.

I agree - Lily was feeling distinctly left out and demanded blog space this week!! Interesting what you said about our summer house - they aren't actually lights, they are shells!! It gave me the idea of lights, though... We might think about that sometime. A neighbour of ours made the shell bunting for us and I thought it would look fun on the summer house. There was a bit left over which we have hung in the apple tree, and it tinkles in the breeze.

    Happy belated WOYWW,

  21. Your random projects are so refreshing, Zsuzsa! I hope your nettle burns are only a memory now; anyway, I have read somewhere that nettle stings help against arthritic pain (I don't know if it is true). Happy summer!
