WOYWW #582: Tim Holtz Curio Box

Two weeks flew by again since I last posted. I'm back today for with a project I completed on Monday. I've recently acquired the Tim Holtz Curio Box die and I had to try it! I'd known about this die for a while but I managed to convince myself that I didn't need it, until I'd watched this video that shows you how to make different size boxes with the same die - what can I say, I was sold!

The photo of my desk for WOYWW shows the aftermath of this project though the mess is an accumulative effect of my previous projects for the past few months - I can't even remember the last time I cleared my desk - not since the new year, come to think of it!

Here are a few photos of my completed project: I used some poppy heads that I collected around the house, gilded them and put them in a small glass bottle filled with acrylic gems to keep them in place. The inside of the box was decorated with the blue/gold gelli prints you can still see lying around on my desk, and the outside was textured with some dry-wall tape and paints/gold gilding wax applied on top. Some decorative elements completed the picture: metal corners, crocheted ribbon and a paper flower I found in my stash.

Some of you were missing Oreo from my blog in previous weeks, so here are a few photos of him to make up for his absence (notice the funny way he sits on the fence - he always does that!).

Then here he is in his favourite position sprawled out on my son's desk while he's playing computer games - the best of buds these two!

And finally a close up of him looking rather domineering, which he is, of course.

Thank you for visiting - I'll be around soon! Happy WOYWW! xx

  1. I do love poppy heads and they look really great after your painting/gilding treatment! The box frame is a great way of displaying them too, so pretty! I laughed at Oreo on the computer desk, at least he isn't getting in the way of the screen.

  3. I love your project, in the colour I associate with you (is the fencing the same colour or is it grey?) and with my favourite flowers - poppies. I would have my garden full of them if I could. Not necessarily the big Papavars but the little Welsh ones would be fine - as long as some were red. The box looks really good with the lit up village around it.
Good to see Oreo looking quite majestic in his pose and good to see you posting.

  4. It is such a waste of time to clean up and it can have a negative effect in that you "hate to make a mess". It is amazing how brainwashed we all were that cleaning up was important. IT is when you work on the dining or kitchen table but unnecessary in one's art room.

  7. HI Zsuzsa GASP!! I love your curio box, it loosk so cool and I can just imagine all the fun you're going to have with that die - a very sound investment I'd say. You're right about my crat room having a bit of a make over - in fact it's a whole new craft room since I was last here, bit more space and I used up loads of patterned papers to cover the boring fronts of my drawers and shelves. Looks like both your boys have grown up since I was last here as well :) Annie C

  12. What a gorgeous box, Zsuzsa - I am agog with jealousy at your creation. You've really outdone yourself with this one, and I'd say that your purchase of the die cut is going to keep you going with inspiration for quite some time. Happy weekend, my friend, and much more creativity! xo

  13. I love your latest project, Zsuzsa! Absolutely gorgeous. I haven't heard of that die before. When I get time I must look at that video. Love your favourite colour scheme lol! As for Oreo, he really made me chuckle, sitting in that funny way on the fence! They do have their funny little ways, don't they, unique to themselves. It's always nice when you manage to capture them in photos. In the final photo, I notice that he seems to have sprouted a few more eyebrow hairs recently! He is looking very healthy, I must say. He's grown into a beautiful cat. (BTW, did you know Oreos are vegan? Haha!)

Thank you for your visit and I'm glad you like my tiny carpets. I've worked it out that there are 5,808 stitches in each one!!! I thought, "There can't be THAT many..." but I double checked - 3 in x 4 in, at 22 stitches to the inch. I'm right, aren't I...? (Maths was never my strong point.) The slowest part is mapping out the initial shape because it involves quite a bit of counting. The head magnifier really helps as it's pretty fine work. I am definitely doing another needle book (and most likely a third one) and am thinking about doing different designs for those. I love oriental carpet designs. I find cross stitch very satisfying and quite addictive - it has a certain rhythm to it. When it's fine like this, it almost looks like bead work.

Glad you liked my latest hippy fashion shot too - and the gladioli! They have nearly all come out now and they are gorgeous. We've got dahlias coming out now so I must remember to get some photos of them. My hubby's done really well with the flowers this year.

    Happy belated WOYWW,
