WOYWW #645: Gelli printing with talcum powder and LB Taster lessons

Oops, I managed to skip another week of WOYWW, but I'm back to show you a view of my desk for week #645. Here it is:

What's that on the gelli plate, you ask? It's talcum powder (aka baby powder). I was inspired by this video to try it. It gives you a resist effect reminiscent of peeled paint. Nothing much to shout about, but it was definitely worth a try.

I've also done exactly 2 of the 35 LifeBook taster lessons. They're still available until the end of the week if you want to check them out. I might do a few more as time allows. Here's a link to all the lessons.

This one was by Laly Mille, who's one of my favourite artists. Her lesson was titled "Poetic Secrets" and used magazine images and book pages to tell a story. Here's my take on it:

Then there was this lesson by Laura Dame called "Intuitive Abstract Play" The point is not to recreate the sample but just to play, so mine looks very different as I went off on a tangent, but that's ok.

And that's it for today. Nice and short - I just wanted to check in and see how everyone else is doing.

Happy #645!

  1. Well, I don't know what Laly Mille's work looks like but `I can assure you I love love love the work of Zsuzsa as shown above. That blue is gorgeous and such beautiful pages. They really stand out with the colours you have used, love the little touches of purple that merges in.
I like the other page too - totally different, much calmer but equally nice. I think it wouldn't be you if you didn't go off at a tangent. You always create beautiful pages and I am a big fan.

  2. Wow, your work is always so inventive and creative, I love them both especially the Garden Escape, that just gorgeous! You always seem to find new ideas and creations, it’s very interesting coming to your blog - I may never do the actual technique but your colourways and images are very inspiring.

  3. Great projects Zsuzsa. Good job you can't see the guilt on my face. I thought this time I would give it a go and I read the first part and that's it! I thought I had plenty of time but where did it go! I am going to have to sit down and go through the classes and make notes, I think it's the only way now if I'm going to complete any of them. Your art work is brilliant, you have a style all your own and I love it. I need to get back to my Masterboards! Wishing you a lovely creative woyww with hugs, Angela x13x

  4. Love that talc resist and the magazine was a wow! I used to save the mags from Eurostar and Planes so I think I'll have to dig those out and have a go.

love the garden escape . .
    Have a good week

  5. Fabulous projects Zsuzsa. I like Laly’s work too. I love that texture in your abstract play piece. Is it a stamp? My husband bought me the course so I don’t have to rush to watch the taster sessions. Happy WOYWW Angela #9

  6. I love those gelli prints! I really must open mine and use it! I used one at a workshop once and subsequently got one, but never used it - I do need to create some drying space for prints! The taster projects look gorgeous. Have a good week. Helen #2

  7. My fav is your intuitive abstract play. I really want to try a couple of those Life Book lessons too. There will never be enough time to try everything on my want to try list!

  8. What an intriguing idea, using talcum powder with the gel press. I'm always amazed at how many ordinary everyday things can be used in art - the only limit is one's imagination! We have a joke - I say "I wonder if I could make art out of that?" to which my hubby replies, "No!!" (emphatically). That's the challenge to prove him wrong!

Your pages are just stunning - what fabulous colour combinations. I agree with Neet about the blue and the touches of purple. Perfect!

Thank you for your comment, and your insights on creativity. I couldn't agree with you more. Up until recently a lot of my time in the studio has been "duty" time, and more recently, the luxury of just playing has been incredible. It is very hard to describe the inner joy one gets from making things that come from within - the deep satisfaction. Sometimes I do get joy from making something I know the recipient will appreciate (my hubby especially) but I do find any challenge set from outside, such as ATC swaps, is a killer to my creativity. I've often felt a bit guilty about that, thinking it was selfish, so hearing your similar views is very reassuring! I have an added problem of limited energy (especially after I've done all the essential chores) and want to use the precious available time and energy in a way that is as satisfying as possible. I think we have a basic need to be creative to express ourselves in its purest form and it has nothing to do with pleasing anybody else - if they do happen to be pleased, that's a bonus!

Card making has always been a bugbear with me because of the ephemeral nature of cards, and the fact that most recipients have no idea how much time and effort it takes, and how much one gives of one's inner resources, to produce something for someone else. I used to experience this to an extreme degree with Mum - I made her a very special collection of gifts and a card that took me weeks to make, for her 90th, and she seemed almost indifferent, which made me feel crushed! My hubby, on the other hand, has kept absolutely everything I've ever made for him.

My new approach to card making - batch making with no particular person in view, is turning out to be a lot more pleasurable and satisfying. It's just a vehicle for putting various ideas into practice and the joy is in the doing of it, with far less thought about its ultimate end! At least I have a photographic record of everything, and a record of the process on my blog so it's not lost once the card is on its way.

  11. Wow, what fabulous work - I love the vibrant colours of your pages and I also love the play page -I would definitely hang that on my wall. The talc resist sounds interesting and I like the effect you've achieved, I might give that a try if I can find my gelli plate!
Hope you have a great week,

  13. I love your pages! I have only done two of the taster sessions too lol but a different two. I love Laly Mille and would have done hers first if possible but I went for the shorter ones since I was short on time. Hopefully get more done this week. You mentioned that your cats don't drink much water - try moving the water away from the food, as they seem to like that better when it's somewhere else. Silly really when there are so many combo bowls you can get that are supposed to have the food in one and the water in another but there you go, cats - what can you do! LOL Happy WOYWW! 14. Just so juicy, Zsuzsa! I must try that talcum powder thing; I'd not seen that one before and it gives some really interesting effects. Thanks for sharing it! And your pages are awesome...you had me at the colour on both spreads!

  15. DOH! I haven't even managed 2! And yeah she's my favourite too, although Tam and her quirky animals always seems to be the thing I take a stab at, not sure why. I saw that video on baby powder on the plate and I am loving your samples. I really need to make some time to play but there are just too many draws on my time at the moment. I better sneak in some taster classes this weekend before they disappear...

    Happy WOYWW, back online :)
